Mushrooms: Your friendly neighbourhood fungi

Although they are not commonly found in houseplant soil, you may occasionally notice mushrooms pop up in your pot, especially if you keep your plants in a humid environment. Most mushrooms will not harm your plant. They break up the soil, making it easier for your plants to access nutrients. You do not have to remove mushrooms, but you may want to if you have pets or small children who may try to eat them.

Sometimes mushrooms can be tricky to remove if they have already laid down spores in the soil. If you notice only one mushroom, simply remove it from the base, being careful not to shake off any spores that can grow new mushrooms. You may also want to dig out the top layer of soil around the area where the mushroom was growing and add new soil. If mushrooms keep appearing around your plant, you may need to repot it. But once again, if you are not worried about your pets or children eating the mushrooms, it is usually better to just leave them.
